Wow... what a parade it was! The
2009 Second Annual Handmade Parade was a grand success! Hundreds of
participants spent months creating fantastic costumes, puppets and
complete ensembles in studios, schools, churches, garages and
backyards... ... and the resulting show of community creativity was a visual feast for the senses! Check out theSlideshow!
There
were lots of smiling faces in the crowds that lined the streets and
more than a few gasps of surprise and wonder at the participants'
astonishing creations! A great day was had by all. Thank you one and
all for your spirit and creativity!
We've created a Flickr photo sharing site so that all can share their photo's and videos. Here is a link to the site.
Please pass this on to your friends that took pics too so that we can
all share with each other. You can also post comments at the site.
Folks that were in the parade didn't get to see the whole parade so
sharing your pics would mean a lot to us!
You can also post comments at the Hillsborough Arts Council Facebook site.

Members of your group can then take the public workshops to help refine the group’s ideas. You’ll be surprised at the creativity within yourself and your group!
Parade organizer and puppet designer, Mark Donley will demonstrate working with cardboard, paper mache' and constructing lightweight giant puppets using reed, bamboo and fabric. Tuesday July 21, 22 and 23rd 10 am till 2 pm Summer Enrichment Program: Childrens Theater and Parade Workshop
The Hillsborough Arts Council is sponsoring a three day theater and parade workshop at Central Elementary School in conjunction with the Orange County Summer Enrichment program. Volunteer Artists from the Hillsborough Art Council's Handmade Parade will work with children to develop artistic, theatrical and music skills culminating in the Children's Handmade Parade on July 23rd. The parade will begin at 10:30 at Central Elementary and parade to Hillsborough Elementary then back to Central. There are no fees for the workshops.
Students registered in the Summer Enrichment Program will create projects and a performance to stimulate creativity and develop the interrelationship between nature, the arts and humanity. Taking inspiration from the Annual Handmade Parade theme "The waters of the Eno and her creatures", the Eno River will serve as a link to the natural environment and science. It will also increase awareness of social responsibility and stewardship of our natural resources.
The collaborative partnership of the Orange County Schools and the Hillsborough Arts Council will give students the opportunity to study and create with professional artists. This will be a fun and creative learning experience for teachers, artists and students alike!

The Orange County Schools Summer enrichment program is a program designed exclusively for pre-selected students. Both at risk students and those seeking additional academic opportunities are included. First through fifth grade students from Central, Efland Cheeks and New Hope Elementary Schools are participating in the program. Summer Enrichment students will explore poetry, creative writing, and drama to sharpen communication skills and motivate them to be successful in school.
We need your help!
This the Hillsborough Arts Council working with The Orange County Schools Summer Enrichment program applied for a grant to develop this program with a greater number of artists, teachers and programs. However, the funding was unavailable. The artists listed above did not want to see this important outreach program fall by the wayside, so they put together this more modest program for the students of the enrichment program. It is an entirely volunteer effort and as such we hope to find donations to help make it possible. Donations will go toward the purchase of materials for the children's workshops. Items of need include:
* White unbleached muslin (for flying bird costume/wings) * Dyes and paints (for bird wings) * 2 gallon plastic buckets (for drumming/storytelling workshop) * Beginner drumsticks (for drumming/storytelling workshop) * Additional misc. materials include cardboard, scissors, staplers, brushes

2009 Parade Theme “Metamorphosis on the Eno”
Well, what
is Metamorphosis? Is it an educational opportunity? Is it a creative
opportunity? Surely it’s all of the above... Before you get bored,
check out this short film
of a girl morphing into a tree created by Vancouver Film School student
Brian Burritt... I'll get back to Brians film later in the
article...
So, what is metamorphisis? The simplest explanation
is the change in body shape from one life cycle stage to the next. The
dictionary describes it as "a profound change in form from one stage to
the next in the life history of an organism, as from the caterpillar to
the pupa and from the pupa to the adult butterfly".
But - It
can also mean any complete change in appearance, character, or
circumstance. Think about growth – change – transformation... Sounds
like a puppet opportunity to me!
Each spring the metamorphosis of
insects takes place on the Eno River and throughout the world.
Butterflies and moths, for instance, pupae - caterpillars holed up for
the winter in cocoons—begin wriggling about inside their cramped little
homes. Soon they push out of the cocoon into the open air. For the first
time, they unfold and test their new wings and legs, which until now
have remained fused to their bodies. Their metamorphosis now complete,
the new insects fly off in search for food.
Metamorphosis can
also refer to the structural or functional modification of a plant
during its development. Even rivers like the Eno have undergone
metamorphosis. The possibilities are as limitless as your imagination.
Can
you envision a complete change of form such as a transformation by
magic? No wonder there are so many stories in literature about
metamorphosis.
Nature’s transformations have inspired our
imaginations for centuries. From Greek mythology to comic book hero’s.
From Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphosis to Kafka’s classic short story
Metamorphosis. From comic books like ‘The Hulk’ to science fiction and
movies like ‘Cat People’ and ‘The Fly’ where a man is transformed into a
housefly: “help meeee”
Okay,
I promised I'd get back to Brian Buritt's short film... I wonder if
Brian was inspired by Ovid’s epic poem Metamorphosis. This ancient Greek
text has been an inspiration from Dante's times to today with writers
such as Salman Rushdie and Kafka finding inspiration in Ovid's poems
dealing with metamorphosis.
Ovid’s poem tells the story of the
Nymph Daphne, who was the daughter of a river god and was pursued by
Apollo... she turned into a laurel tree to protect herself. Nymphs were
nature spirits responsible for the care of plants and animals in the
wilds. Naturally many of the Greek metamorphosis myths, which describe
the origins of plants, feature Nymphs. The most famous of these is
surely Daphne.
Apollo was chasing this daughter of the river-god
Peneus through the woods when the magical metamorphosis occurred. As
she ran she felt Apollo’s breath upon her neck...but there in front of
her the trees opened and she saw her father’s river. She screamed to
him, ‘Help me! Father, help me!’ Suddenly dragging numbness came over
her as her feet seemed rooted in the earth she had been running over.
Bark was enclosing her and leaves were sprouting forth. She had been
changed into a Laurel tree!
What possibilities for puppets! We
aren’t held back creatively with this theme!
Mark Donley, 2009
